Finding and selecting a lawn care company can be a time-consuming process. With a little homework, you can have complete confidence in your selection.

Most lawn maintenance companies offer a basic service of lawn mowing, edging, shrub pruning, blowing of trimming debris (leaf & grass clippings) and landscape clean-up on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Some companies finely mulch (recommended) and others bag grass clippings. Likewise, some companies haul off the green waste debris and others leave for you to place by the curb as bulk trash pickup day nears. Pricing typically ranges from $25 to $150 depending on the size, complexity and services required for your landscape. Many maintenance companies such as estate or grounds management companies will require a signed contract, while other smaller landscape companies and contractors, will work on an 'as-needed' and short-term basis.

Many lawn care and maintenance firms will offer additional services bundled into programs or packages for additional costs. Additional horticultural service programs can include seasonal color installations, tree health care and arborist services, turf fertilization, weeding, and holiday decoration installations such as Christmas lights. Some companies provide more extensive landscape construction services such as landscape renovation, landscape installation, stonework, fencing, patios, and water features, such as fountains and ponds.

Things to consider

  • How long has the lawn care company operated?
  • Inquire if the company is licensed, bonded, and insured.
  • Request and check references.
  • What types of insect, weed, and disease control techniques are used? Are they safe for children and pets? Be aware of any post-application lawn usage restrictions.
  • Don't forget pets! If you have gated animals, explain to the contractor how you would like this handled.
  • Ensure that both you and your contractor understand all timelines and expectations detailed in any contract signed. Specify what services are included and what is not included.
